Michigan emergency manager law could go to ballot
Opponents of Michigan's out-and-out emergency manager law have gathered enough signatures to put a repeal measure on the November ballot, form elections officials said Wednesday.
The finding outlined in the memo sent by elections stick to the State Board of Canvassers could put into limbo emergency managers overseeing four communities and three manner districts across the state. The board is set to vote Thursday on whether the issue will go on the ballot. If it does, the law will be suspended at once until the November election.
Gov. Rick Snyder's administration says exigency managers would be allowed to remain in place while the current law is on hold because the status would revert to a 1990 law authorizing their use. But they would have far weaker powers than those outlined under the widespread law.
It wasn't until the current law passed last year that emergency managers were authorized to pitch out union contracts and strip authority from locally elected officials, though Bank spokesman Caleb Buhs said local officials could give up their salaries under the old law. He added that putting the repeal on the ballot doesn't finish more emergency managers from being appointed in cities and school districts found to be under economic emergencies.
