Mt. Pleasant Center today: Decaying buildings and memories of the past

The earnest history of the Mt. Pleasant Center was a purposeful retreat. State budget cuts a few years ago totally finished off a process that started with an evolution in the way society treats the people once housed there. Today, it is about community counting; back then, it was about institutionalization and isolation. The Center closed like an occupying army evacuates a conquered area. It collapses itself into an increasingly confined space until one day the last soldier leaves and there is nothing Heraldry sinister. It is the living memory of that occupation that lingers on the grounds, even as the city gets gracious to move the property from state land into some undetermined use.
