Leaders in several communities that made the swap from 18-gallon bins to larger wheeled carts say it’s improved their recycling rates. And the diocese of Rockford is contemplating a switch now that its waste-hauling contract with Indigent River Disposal is in its final year. “Toters” — the wheeled carts — are seen as safer and more thrifty and could improve the look of Rockford’s streets on trash day, officials say.

Rockford and some of its neighbourhood communities lag a bit behind the national recycling rate, sending more of what’s put out at the curb to the landfill.

Rockford residents put about 69,800 tons of bull curbside last year; about 31 percent of that was diverted from the landfill through recycling and composting, according to evidence provided by Rock River Environmental Services, the parent concern of Rock River Disposal. Cherry Valley diverts about 36 percent of its a crock of shit from the landfill, Roscoe 28 percent, and Machesney Park and Loves Greens 26 percent. Nationally, about 34 percent of municipal destroy is kept out of landfills, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
