Any problems with open shelving in a kitchen?

 My soft pedal and I are considering a horizontal open shelf in our kitchen to replace some of our cabinets gruff old.

 In one instance, we have had open shelves in the corners of our kitchen cabinets and I can not believe how fast my pottery decorative dust covered me!
